quick facts:
lived: 1912 – 1956
born: Wyoming
famous for: splatter paint canvases
why do I care?: he revolutionized the way people think about painting and had a major role in developing the abstract expressionist movement
In stereo typical artist fashion, Jackson Pollock was known to be a recluse, a wildly bipolar personality, and an alcoholic. All the more reason we love him. He was a free spirit and a true revolutionary.
Instead of painting on an easel like most fine painters before him, he laid out extremely large canvases (think 8ft by 20ft) on the ground.
Whereas other painters used a palette to mix and perfect colors before applying them to the surface, Pollock used paint straight from the paint can, while smoking…
Compared to painters who created visually realistic still-lifes, portraits, landscapes, or other representational scenes, Pollock splattered paint.
Los Angelinos will be proud to hear that Pollock lived in Echo Park where he attended Manual Arts High School. From there he followed his bro to NY and was later commissioned to paint by Peggy Guggenheim. The art critic Clement Greenberg saw the commissioned piece and wrote:
“I took one look at it and I thought, ‘Now that’s great art,’ and I knew Jackson was the greatest painter this country had produced.”
His work focused on color, contrast, lines and has powerful evocative qualities. As graffiti artists can appreciate, mastering and elevating the perfect drip to a level of fine art that resonates well past its inception, is no small feat.
