finding fabric treasures in los angeles

by

The other day the Apliiq fabric fam went on scavenging for some visually delicious fabrics. This is one of the most exciting adventures of being a part of Apliiq. Every time we walk into a fabric store, there’s a wonderful, overwhelming sensation when you feast your eyes on all the possibilities.

After a typical LA drive, itself an own adventure, we found THE spot. When you walk inside every fabric store that has a wide selection, at first it just looks the same as other stores. It’s kind of like when you walk into a dark room, with no light at all, your eyes start adjusting. That’s what kind of eyes you need when going into a fabric store.

Don’t know how or where to start? Pick a side of the room, then walk over there. That’s one way to do it. Scan your eyes on the colors, shapes, patterns. Do it again. If you’re an expert, you’ll skim through and something will pop right out. For the newbies, take your time. Honestly, taking your sweet time is good for both experts and beginners.

This particular spot had such energetic and happy representatives, making the whole experience unforgettable. Each person had a story to tell, a joke to share, and taught us about the place.

This store sprouted in the 1960s, shared with generations of the same families and friends. We found out that they were from all parts of the world from Lebanon to Argentina. Some of them speak many languages, even one combined it all together as he spoke to us.

There’s a secret passage towards the back for vintage fabric. It was a bit scary having to climb a tall, wobbly ladder to check out the goods. Almost like Indiana Jones.

When you go to the right side of the store, you’ll see hundreds of framed photos and autographs of celebrities that have shopped at this fabric world. Can you guess who went fabric hunting there too? Britney Spears, Arsenio Hall, Bette Midler, and Tyra Banks are only some of them. Even the voice of Lisa Simpson, Yeardley Smith.

Sure enough, we are coming back to this store for another fabric hunting adventure!
