The Crowned Beats fabric was inspired by the iconic late 20th century artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Walter created his fabric design by drawing inspiration and symbology from the artwork Basquiat created for the documentary Style Wars legendary theme song.

Basquiat was a New York street artist in the 70s and 80s who challenged the constructs of power and social norms through words and symbolism in his work.  He was known for his clever written phrases painted on New York City walls signed ‘samo’.  Jean-Michel explored dichotomies and dualities in his art, as a testament to these themes he was known to paint barefoot while wearing expensive suits.

The Basquiat inspired fabric print combines geometry, words, music, motifs, and a stark monochromatic color palate. Learn Walter’s story and the origins of this fabric by watching his short film.
